I am sure it’s written somewhere in the t&c’s, and I have personal experience of this, numerous times! Yes ‘customer damaged’ items are refunded from seller funds.

Word gets around quickly about how to scam sellers and i suspect if a few more sellers issued letters before action it would get around too and not look like an easy way to get something for nothing. One ask her to ask Amazon to recharge her card and for her to withdraw the claim OR to repay you for your losses (iem plus postage) plus your out of pocket expenses. You would need to give her a time scale to reimburse you and you might give her two options. I would fully expect to win a case like this in the small claims court (on line filing and no need to attend court). The letter should contain the “evidence” including her admission that the dog chewed it after delivery and the claim which shows she is clearly manipulating the Amazon system. I would enclose a copy of the letter and set out your losses and the potential court costs that she would bear if the case went to court.
I would have already sent a letter before action to the buyer by recorded delivery. You can spend hours arguing the toss with the performance team - assuming you get an answer and the escalation team don’t seem to have sufficient capacity to sort the many silly decisions out. Personally I wouldn’t mess around with a claim like this.
